Preparing Your Car for Florida Summer
Florida summers bring intense heat, high humidity, and daily thunderstorms — all of which take a toll on your vehicle. A little preparation now can prevent breakdowns, expensive repairs, and unsafe driving conditions during the hottest months of the year.
Check Your Cooling System
Your engine's cooling system works overtime in Florida heat. Before summer hits, have your coolant level and condition checked. Old or contaminated coolant loses its ability to regulate engine temperature. We recommend a cooling system flush every 30,000 miles or as specified in your owner's manual. Also inspect radiator hoses for cracks, bulges, or soft spots — heat accelerates hose deterioration.
Test Your A/C System
Don't wait until the first 95°F day to find out your A/C isn't working. Have your air conditioning system tested in spring. A properly functioning A/C isn't just about comfort — in extreme heat, it's a safety issue. Signs your A/C needs attention include warm air from the vents, weak airflow, unusual odors, or strange noises when the system kicks on.
Inspect Your Battery
Heat is actually harder on car batteries than cold. Florida's extreme temperatures accelerate the chemical reaction inside the battery, causing fluid evaporation and internal corrosion. A battery that's 3-4 years old should be tested before summer. Look for signs of corrosion on the terminals, slow engine cranking, or dimming headlights.
Check Your Tires
Hot pavement increases tire pressure and accelerates wear. Check your tire pressure monthly (when tires are cold) and inspect tread depth. Under-inflated tires generate excess heat, which can lead to blowouts — especially dangerous on I-75 or other high-speed roads. Make sure your spare tire is also properly inflated and in good condition.
Replace Wiper Blades
Florida's daily summer storms demand effective wiper blades. Sun and heat degrade rubber quickly, so blades that worked fine in winter may streak and chatter by summer. Replace them every 6-12 months for clear visibility during those intense afternoon downpours.
Check Your Belts and Hoses
Rubber components deteriorate faster in heat. Serpentine belts, timing belts, and coolant hoses should be inspected for cracks, glazing, or wear. A broken serpentine belt can disable your power steering, A/C, and alternator all at once — not something you want happening in July traffic.
Top Off All Fluids
Brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid all play important roles. Heat can cause fluids to break down faster, so make sure everything is at the proper level and in good condition.
